A cat wandered onstage during Romeo’s death scene in Türkiye, briefly turning the Shakespearean tragedy into comedy

A cat became an unlikely star in Türkiye after wandering onto the stage during a performance of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and upstaging one of classical theater’s most tragic scenes.

The surprise entrance occurred during a performance by the Imperial Russian Ballet in the western city of Izmir on Friday when the cat strolled out as Romeo lay dying in the climactic final act.

According to prima ballerina Larisa Korsakova, who played Juliet, the cat settled beside Romeo’s head and started nibbling on his hair, triggering laughter in the audience and briefly turning Shakespeare’s tragedy into comedy.

Despite the interruption, the dancers remained in character and finished the performance, Korsakova told RIA Novosti.

“A professional actor knows how to control their emotions. I didn’t leave the character of Juliet; I had to live out this life and bring my character’s story to its conclusion,” she said.

Videos of the incident quickly went viral online, racking up more than 8 million views combined in less than 24 hours.

In the comments, viewers joked that the cat “decided to resurrect Romeo” and offer an alternative ending.

“The cat was trying to prove that Romeo was only pretending to be dead,” one user wrote.

“Get up, change my litter box. What are you doing lying around here for?” another said.

“The first and probably last time the audience has ever cracked up during this scene,” another person commented.

Cats enjoy an unusually privileged status in Türkiye, where street cats are treated as beloved community residents. Millions roam freely through cities and are cared for by locals. Istanbul is particularly famous for its cats, which have become a symbol of the city and were celebrated in the 2016 documentary ‘Kedi’.

In recent years, cats have crashed classical concerts, theater performances, and fashion shows. One famously wandered through the string section and onto the conductor’s podium at the Istanbul Music Festival during a performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 in 2023. A stray cat stole the spotlight at the Esmod International Fashion Show in Istanbul in 2018 by walking the runway. In 2015, three cats bypassed security and appeared on the main stage at the G20 summit in Antalya just before world leaders were due to speak.
